As part of Hackney’s ongoing green transformation, Meristem is working with Hackney Council on a new project along Amhurst Road to create a green corridor connecting Hackney Downs and Hackney Central Overground stations. Building on previous collaborations with the council on projects such as Marvin Street and Downham Road, the scheme introduces sustainable planting and rain gardens that support biodiversity, improve air quality, and enhance pedestrian safety.

The project forms part of Hackney Council’s commitment to delivering a greener, more accessible borough. It responds to local concerns about limited green space, unsafe junctions, and rising pollution levels, helping to create a healthier and more welcoming environment for residents, businesses, and visitors.
What are the aims of the Amhurst Road transformation?
Hackney Council are focusing efforts on Amhurst Road as it is a key pedestrian route but lacked greenery, had outdated infrastructure and suffered from heavy footfall without spaces to rest. The project aims to:
- New 1,000m² linear park with planting, seating, and a child-friendly play space
- Rain gardens to manage surface water and reduce flooding
- Safer crossings and better bus flow with new zebra crossings and relocated stops
Our progress so far:
Over past two weeks, our team have been on site clearing the existing beds and preparing the ground for 3 weeks of planting.
Cleared and salvaged planting: Existing beds with 20-year-old plants were cleared, with some healthy species lifted and redistributed around the borough, including a few kept on site like Cordylines.
Ground preparation: The area has been cleared of weeds and debris, then rotavated to prepare for the next stage.
Next steps: Stepping stones will be installed and replanting will begin with a new, low-level and more open planting design.
This project builds on our ongoing partnership with Hackney Council to create safer and more accessible green spaces. Keep an eye on our socials for updates on the progress of this project and the wider transformation of the borough.
